The Department of Transport, Abu Dhabi

The Department of Transport is the government body responsible for regulating and planning an efficient and well-integrated transport system for Abu Dhabi across public transport, highways, maritime and aviation sectors.

The Department serves the public interest by enhancing mobility and delivering safe, secure and environmentally responsible transport.  It is an integral partner in Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 and is committed to contributing to the economic development of the Emirate – working alongside strategic partners in public and private realms.

A world class transport system is vital for Abu Dhabi to support a future population of three million; the projection for the year 2030. In April 2009, the Government of Abu Dhabi adopted the Surface Transport Master Plan – STMP – a detailed masterplan and implementation programme developed from the conceptual transportation strategy outlined in Plan 2030, which covers not only the city of Abu Dhabi but the whole of the Emirate.

The strategic plan integrates all transport systems for Abu Dhabi – air, regional rail, metro, tram, bus, taxi and ferry systems, as well as improved road networks and operations. Additionally, the STMP includes a number of strategic transportation demand management policies intended to support the Emirate in achieving the most sustainable future for its transportation sector.

The DoT is responsible for regulating key aspects of maritime operations in Abu Dhabi and has a dedicated Maritime Sector. Public transport that makes the most of the access provided by the Emirate’s waterways – including plans for ferries and water taxis – has a critical role to play in Abu Dhabi’s transport future.
