As a classification society, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, better known as ClassNK, creates the rules that safeguard ships, their crews, and the marine environment. With more than 170 million gross tons on our register, ClassNK is the world’s largest classification society, helping ensure the safety of some 20% of the world’s merchant fleet.
Our principal work is the survey of newbuildings and ships in service, including their hull structures, propulsion systems, electrical and electronic systems, safety equipment and cargo handling gear, to ensure they have been built and maintained in accordance with our class rules, international conventions, and flag state requirements. ClassNK is authorized to perform statutory surveys on behalf of more than 100 flag administrations around the globe, and successful registration by ClassNK means the vessel will be recognized by underwriters the world over, including the Institute of London Underwriters.
Far more than just a technical organization, however, ClassNK is also a leader in maritime research and education. The ClassNK Research Center has been recognized as a world leader in maritime R&D, and ClassNK is working with industry partners around the globe to ensure a safer, greener future for the maritime industry.
Although based in Japan, ClassNK maintains a global service network of more than 110 exclusive surveyor offices. Our surveyors work in shipyards and ports around the world, wherever they may be called upon to assess the condition of a ship, to ensure that all of our services our available to clients 24/7, worldwide.
