As a leading international classification society, promoting the protection of the natural environment has always been a key element of the ABS Mission. Within ABS recognition of the need to protect our natural environment is integral to the rules and technology development process and in the provision of classification services to the marine industry.
From an initial focus on the prevention of oil pollution, today's holistic approach addresses a much broader range of issues that have the potential to negatively impact the world's atmosphere and oceans - from emissions, to the unchecked spread of marine organisms in ballast water, to the development of new concepts that will improve fuel efficiencies, reduce this industry's carbon footprint in port and at sea and address the growing challenge of promoting environmentally sensitive ship recycling.
Much work still needs to be done to develop the new technologies that will assist the industry in its efforts to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. ABS applauds the many individuals and companies that are working hard to develop these new technologies and products. And we congratulate those who have been shortlisted for this prestigious Seatrade Environment Protection Award. Together we can better protect our planet and conserve its beauty for future generations.
