Capt Jitendra Misra, Managing Director, Emarat Maritime LLC, Dubai has devoted 37 years of his life to the Maritime industry. The start of his distinguished career was as a Deck Cadet with India Steamship in 1971 and he steadily ascended the ranks to become one of the youngest Masters’ in the Indian shipping fleet. After over eight years in Command of General cargo ships, container vessels, Panamax and capsize bulk carriers, he stepped ashore in 1988 to take up commercial challenges ashore with a firm in UK. As a lead up to a shore based assignment, he completed the Final examinations of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, London in 1988 and came 3rd on the International Merit List.

A call from the Middle East brought him to Dubai in February 1990, when he was involved in the set up and commencement of the ship-owning division of the Sharaf Group. His experience, qualifications and hard work enabled him to quickly climb up the corporate ladder. He is, since 1997, the Managing Director of EML. Shipping was at its ebb when he started with the ship-owning division of Sharaf with an investment of half a million dollars and today the Emarat Maritime fleet is valued at over a billion dollars. His vision, hard work and a thorough knowledge of the market saw him achieve this tremendous growth. The strength of EML lies in the leadership and he has guided the Company through calm and stormy waters to become an organization recognized world over for its values and commitment. He has brought tremendous value to maritime industry in this region by educating the shipping professionals through the ICS and offering sound advice to the numerous business heads, maritime bodies and media who call on him frequently. He always has time for everyone and hears them out patiently, and does this with a smile. An extremely pleasant demeanour endears him to one and all.

Capt. Jitendra Misra is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, London and a Member of the Institute's Controlling Council. He is the founding Chairman of the UAE Branch of the Institute. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, London and after being the Honorary Corresponding Member for a number of years, he took the initiative to set up the UAE Section and was elected as the first Secretary General.  Further, he is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London and is also is a founding member and Secretary General of the UAE ship owners association.

As a Senior and respected professional in the Shipping Industry he  lectures regularly on various aspects of the Maritime and Transport Industry and also works very closely as a shipping consultant for certain Law Enforcement Agencies.

Despite a very hectic schedule and burden of work, he remains, at heart, a seafarer and is always looking for innovations in ships and shipping. Over the last one and a half years, he has been instrumental and very deeply involved with a leading Japanese Shipbuilder in the design and development of the world’s largest Supramax bulk carrier of 60,000 DWT. The vessel type has been appropriately named HOMIMAX, which incorporates the first two letters from the name of the Managing Director of the Japanese shipyard, Mr, HORI and the first two letters from MISRA. This interest in the design and development of ships has lead to the development of the HOMIMAX 2, set to be the world’s largest post-panamax bulk carrier of 120,000 DWT. Both designs have got an immediate and very positive response from Owners and Operators. As it turns out, this is a tremendous contribution to dry-bulk shipping.

When away from work, he enjoys a round of golf occasionally and has improved by leaps and bounds in the short time he has played the game. Cricket and squash are the other games he has a keen interest in.
